Tips to Help You Get Started in Remnant: From the Ashes – GameSpew (2024)

While Remnant: From the Ashes officially launches on 20th August, digitally pre-ordering the game on certain formats allows you to start playing it right now.

If you have pre-ordered Remnant: From the Ashes and are just getting stuck into it, you’re probably finding out that it’s not an easy game, especially when playing alone. As we’ve already put some hours into it though, there is some knowledge we can impart which might help you get started.

Below are some tips that hopefully will help you find your feet in Remnant: From the Ashes. There’s nothing spoilery, so take them all in.

Don’t worry too much about your starting class

When creating a character in Remnant: From the Ashes, you’ll be forced to choose from three classes: Hunter, Ex-Cultist, and Scrapper. Don’t spend more time wondering which one is right for you than you need to, as ultimately it doesn’t matter too much.

Your character class basically determines your starting equipment and traits, and the equipment that the other character classes start with can be purchased very easily. Just choose the one that looks/sounds the most appealing to you and start playing. Over time you’ll build a character that suits you, using equipment, skills and traits without any constraints based on your choice of class.

Know when to reroll your world

Remnant: From the Ashes is hard. You might battle your way through multiple areas, then come face to face with a boss that you just cannot beat. Not without getting stronger, anyway.

If you find yourself in such a situation, you might be tempted to reroll your world and start from scratch. Don’t. Rerolling your world will scale the difficulty of the game to your highest piece of equipment, potentially making the game harder for you.

Rerolling the world is best done when you’ve completed the game and your equipment is maxed out. Simply visit the World Stone back in Ward 13 and you’ll find you can reroll your world from there. It’ll reset your progress in your current campaign, but you’ll once again be able to travel though exploration areas, collecting scrap, items and materials along the way. You might even happen upon a new quest or two.

Use the right weapon for the job

Ammo is limited in Remnant: From the Ashes, so it must be used wisely. Each weapon also has its own strengths and weaknesses. Learn to use the right weapon in the right situation.

Weak enemies that try to rush you are best dealt with using melee attacks, for instance, while stronger melee-focused enemies might be best combated with a shotgun. And for those enemies that like to shoot you, you should at least always have your trusty pistol at hand. Using the right weapons to dispatch your foes, you’ll find yourself having a much easier time with Remnant: From the Ashes.

Upgrade your gear

You won’t get very far in Remnant: From the Ashes without upgrading your equipment. Whenever you encounter a checkpoint, consider momentarily warping back to Ward 13 to upgrade your gear so that you take less damage while dishing out more.

Scrap and iron is quite plentiful, so you can upgrade your starting gear without worrying about wasting resources. And strive to strike a balance. Being able to dish out loads of damage is good, but it’s pointless if you die after just a couple of hits.

Visit merchants

There aren’t too many merchants in Ward 13, the hub of Remnant: From the Ashes, so make a habit of visiting them all regularly. Reggie, for instance, will sell you helpful consumables that give you the upper hand in battle, while Ace proves to be a helpful source of materials useful for crafting.

If you find any mysterious items such as a strange coin while playing, it’s worth paying a visit to the merchants you know, too. They might be able to shed some light on the item you’ve found, and even offer a reward for it.

The dodge button is your friend

Just like in games such as Dark Souls, the dodge button is key to your survival in Remnant: From the Ashes. Many enemies will rush at you, either exploding when they get close or unleashing devastating melee attacks. Using the dodge button, you can avoid taking any damage if timed just right.

Be aware that dodging requires stamina though, and so does running. Run out of stamina and you’ll find yourself to be a sitting duck until it restores.

Destroy boxes

As you play Remnant: From the Ashes, keep an eye out for wooden boxes that you can easily destroy with your melee weapon. They quite often contain scrap and materials, which both come in useful throughout your adventure.

You’ll find plenty of boxes in Ward 13 as well. The scrap and materials you can get from them are particularly useful when you first start the game, but it’s worth breaking them whenever they appear.

Explore Ward 13

When you leave Ward 13 for the first time, the first room you come across has a Ward 13 keycard in it. Pick it up.

After finding a checkpoint, the keycard will allow you to further explore Ward 13 and collect some goodies if you warp back. For example, on the B2 floor, the one below where you turned on the reactor, you’ll find the Elder Knowledge Trait by interacting with a tape machine. There’s also an SMG to plunder if you can find the required key.

Play with others

While you can play it solo, Remnant: From the Ashes is designed with co-op play in mind. So, if you can, play it with others.

Having two friends or family members is ideal, but the game does also feature online matchmaking. Get a good team together and you’ll find yourself enjoying Remnant: From the Ashes more than ever, while also making steady progress.
